Are You Coachable?

I have the pleasure of coaching some amazing, driven, determined people in my Relentless Athletic Training classes. Athletes who, just like me, made the decision to join the CrossFit Central community and take on some of the toughest workouts they’ve ever seen. What spurred us into action? For some it was inspiration - this is why I joined as a client over 3 years ago. I was inspired by the coaches I met, other clients I met who had achieved such fantastic physical results from CrossFit. People with passion!

Others were likely spurred into action from desperation - to lose weight, get healthy, etc for some event or reason. This is the more common reason why people start training and eating healthy. Whatever the reason, everyone was MOTIVATED by something (internal or external) to get to class. Showing up is important - you can’t get results without consistency, but you also need to be focused and present when you’re in class. Giving 100% or more to your workouts. Ready to get better and accomplish more. Aware of your own mind-games and prepared to become more mentally tough. Open to encouragement and help. In a word: COACHABLE.

Coachable people all share 5 distinct character traits, according to an article in Forbes Magazine:

  1. Humility - Do you accept that you need help to accomplish your goals? Or are you a know-it-all? Open your heart and mind to asking for help, and you will receive it.
  2. Action Bias - Are you inclined and willing to get off your ass and do work? If so, you’re comfortable taking action. GO!
  3. Purity of Purpose - do you want to get better, learn more, change your life? You have to be hungry. When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
  4. Willingness to Surrender Control - Are you letting your coach do their job? Train you as they have been taught? Using results-based methods that have worked not only for hundreds of their clients, but also for themselves?! Let them help you achieve it, too.
  5. Faith - the most important - ties into surrendering control. Have faith in your coach and the process. Are you questioning everything they are telling you to do? Fighting them along the way? Have faith in the fact that your coach as a personal interest and investment in your success. They became a coach because they enjoy winning and get joy from seeing others win. So, be a winner - BE COACHABLE!
